Jamaican National Team
Onyx King: Representing Jamaica on the Ice
At just 20 years old, I have had the distinct honor of representing the Jamaican National Hockey Team for the past two years. Joining the squad at 18 was a transformative experience; as one of the younger players on the team, I initially grappled with nerves. However, being taken "under the wing" by veteran teammates taught me a vital lesson: impact isn't defined by age, but by a positive mindset and a commitment to the collective goal.
While my first year was a whirlwind of victory and cultural immersion, my second year provided the necessary challenge of personal growth. Although my individual performance didn't meet my personal expectations, the experience was invaluable. It highlighted the resilience required to build a program in a country where ice hockey is still emerging. I realized that my role extends beyond the scoreboard; I am a first-generation Jamaican-American helping to pioneer a new chapter in sports history.
Representing my heritage, a culture not traditionally associated with winter sports, is a source of immense pride. Seeing the global support and positive reactions online reaffirms that we are changing the narrative. Looking ahead, I plan to leverage these experiences to serve as a role model and an ambassador. I believe the discipline and networking skills I’ve gained on the ice will translate into strong professional partnerships and leadership opportunities in the business world and beyond.
